CISONECC PROJECTS

CISONECC is made up of diverse range of Local and International Non-Governmental Organisations and Faith Based Organisations, as well as Networks and Associations working in climate change and disaster risk management (DRM) in Malawi. These are autonomous organisations with aspirations related to climate change and DRM and have unified responsibility to contribute to the network’s objectives through collaborative efforts.

The National Level Climate Action Campaign on Agroecology in Malawi has been designed to support dialogues with the Government of Malawi, aimed at influencing Agro-ecology integration in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plan (NAP), recognizing it as a climate change adaptation approach.

Climate and Disaster Risk Management Advocacy Project

With support from Trocaire, CISONECC is implementing Climate and Disaster Risk Management Advocacy Project. The project contributes to Trocaire’s ICSP programme outcome on Ensuing that People living in poverty, particularly rural women and youth in their households, user groups and communities from targeted areas of Balaka, Chikwawa and Machinga districts are collaborating in advocacy initiatives for their rights (e.g. for seed, food, budgetary, markets engagement, services (financial, education, technical, information) and rights related to the sustainable management and governance of natural resources

Malawi Joint Advocacy Strategy project

CISONECC in partnership with Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) is leading the implementation of the Malawi Joint Advocacy Strategy project in a consortium with other 3 organizations. The purpose of the project is to support the implementation of the shared advocacy strategy, developed by SCIAF’s Malawian partners. The other implementing partners include the following: CADECOM Lilongwe; CADECOM Mangochi; and Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP). CISONECC has been using the BAF forum to conduct awareness and advocacy on climate change related issues affecting Malawi and even beyond its borders.

Among other activities, the project planned to raise awareness on DRM and Meteorological Policy frameworks to the participants of the meeting. With support from SCIAF, CISONECC is organizing a mass awareness raising DRM and meteorology policy frameworks, to be done during the BAF.

Promoting access to Pro-Poor Clean Energy solutions in Malawi

Contributing to the Government’s efforts to increase access to renewable energy, Civil Society Network on Climate Change (CISONECC) with financial support from Oxfam in America through Oxfam in Malawi implemented the Promoting Access to Pro-poor Clean Energy Solutions in Malawi Project Phase III from January to June 2023. The project aimed at increasing access to pro-poor clean energy solutions in Malawi, specifically, enhanced non-state actors’ knowledge in renewable energy for effective participation in in development of the sector

Supporting Needs-Based Advocacy on Adaptation in Africa Project

The Civil Society Network on Climate Change (CISONECC) with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) is implementing the project: “Supporting Needs-Based Advocacy on Adaptation in Africa”. The project aims to elevate needs-based adaptation in global and regional policy spaces and contribute significantly to increasing global, regional and national ambition on adaptation that respond to the special needs and circumstances. However, this requires adequate financing towards adaptation actions.

Enhancing Access and Participation in Climate Change Policy Development and Implementation Project

CISONECC in partnership with Development Aid for People to People (DAPP) with support from the Commonwealth Foundation is implementing an Enhancing Access and Participation in Climate Change Policy Development and Implementation Project. The goal of the project is to capacitate sub-national actors to take a leading role in the development, implementation, and monitoring of climate change actions in Malawi. This is to be done through increased awareness of civil society organizations on climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation measures and related policy frameworks in Malawi; and enhanced capacity of civil society organizations (CSOs) to implement climate change-related interventions in Malawi.

Community-led Planning and Management for Biodiversity Protection and Resilient Communities in the Catchment Area of Lake Chilwa, Malawi Programme

CISONECC in partnership with Churches Action in Relief and Development (CARD) and International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) with financial support from Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA), the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) and Trōcaire are implementing a Community-led Planning and Management for Biodiversity Protection and Resilient Communities in the Catchment Area of Lake Chilwa, Malawi Programme in the three Lake Chilwa basin districts of Zomba, Phalombe and Machinga. The overall goal of the programme is to ensure that rural communities living in poverty around Lake Chilwa Basin are more environmentally and economically sustainable and resilient due to a rehabilitated, sustainably 
managed and protected Lake Chilwa Basin.
